A different way of thinking about protein.
At first glance, Black Soldier Fly larvae may not be what you’d expect to find in a premium dog treat. But viewed through the lens of veterinary nutrition and modern science, they reveal something far more interesting: a thoughtful, nourishing protein source with a lighter footprint.
A natural part of the menu.
Dogs are naturally curious, opportunistic omnivores. While animal protein remains an important part of their diet, wild canids are also known to investigate and consume a wide variety of foods—including fruits, vegetation and, when available, insects.
More than just another protein.
Black Soldier Fly larvae are far more than a sustainable ingredient. They provide high-quality protein containing all of the essential amino acids dogs require, while also being highly digestible and increasingly recognised as an exciting alternative protein source in veterinary nutrition.
What makes a protein "complete"?
Proteins are built from smaller building blocks called amino acids. Dogs require twenty-two amino acids to grow, repair tissues and support normal body function. While some can be produced by the body, ten essential amino acids must come from the diet.
A complete protein provides these essential amino acids in the right proportions to meet a dog’s nutritional needs.
Black Soldier Fly protein is considered a complete protein, making it an excellent foundation for balanced canine nutrition.
A different protein for sensitive dogs.
Dogs can develop adverse reactions to ingredients in their food, with dietary proteins being one possible trigger. While true food allergies are relatively uncommon, food sensitivities and intolerances are problems veterinarians encounter regularly.
Because Black Soldier Fly protein is still relatively new in companion animal nutrition, many dogs have had little or no previous exposure to it. That makes it a novel protein for many pets, and one of the reasons it has attracted growing interest in veterinary nutrition.
Every dog is different. If you suspect your dog has a food allergy or food intolerance, we always recommend speaking with your veterinarian. Choosing the right diet should be based on your dog’s individual needs.
Doing more with less.
Good nutrition will always be our first priority. The fact that Black Soldier Fly protein can also be produced using fewer natural resources is another reason we’re excited about its future.
Sometimes the most remarkable ideas aren’t about choosing between nutrition and sustainability. They’re about finding a way to achieve both.
